Just after Christmas in 1984, precious two-year-old Ann Denman lost her battle against cancer. Maggie LaBove and Nancy Dillard, friends of Ann’s parents, Trey and Sally Denman, pondered for several years what could be done in Ann’s memory that would make a difference. In 1989, they gathered a group of close friends together and decided that a luncheon to raise funds for pediatric cancer research would be a fitting memorial.
Over three million dollars later, Mothers Against Cancer continues to be a leader in funding childhood cancer research at Texas Children’s Hospital Cancer Center. This group is a registered non-profit organization, composed of dedicated volunteer women whose primary goal is to raise funds for the research necessary to lead to a cure for all forms of childhood cancer … all because of the love for little Ann.

At Texas Children’s Cancer Center, we are reminded each day that the small gestures and kindness’ extended to the patients and families treated here often become the foundation for great things. Mothers Against Cancer, a registered non-profit organization, began in 1989 in response to the death of a friend’s child. A luncheon was hosted in honor of that child and $9,300 was raised for research at Texas Children’s Cancer Center. Since that impressive beginning, Mothers Against Cancer has raised over 2 million dollars to support research at Texas Children’s Cancer Center. Mothers Against Cancer is unique, there are no paid employees so every penny of the money raised goes directly to research.

The battle against childhood cancer is fought on many fronts, and through the years Mothers Against Cancer has contributed to a wide variety of promising research. Their support makes it possible to continue to discover new treatments for children with these devastating diseases. My personal thanks to Maggie LaBove, founder of Mothers Against Cancer, and the hundreds of volunteers who have made Mothers Against Cancer such a success. I am confident that one day the efforts of Mothers Against Cancer will help make it possible for us to realize our shared goal of curing 100% of children with cancer throughout the world.
and Elise C. Young

On December 17, 2009, Dr. Poplack wrote to Mothers Against Cancer again saying:

I would like to thank each of you for your tireless efforts in support of Texas Children’s Cancer Center. I recognize that the extraordinary check we received represents an enormous amount of hard work on your part. We are grateful for your generosity and we are honored to be a steward of your hard-earned dollars.

We also appreciate the time you spend visiting the patients in our inpatient unit. Your smiling faces, as well as the incredible gifts you bring to our patients and their moms, bring great joy year after year.

On behalf of all the families who benefit from your tireless efforts, I thank you sincerely. Have a wonderful holiday!

We would like to express our deep appreciation and gratitude to Mothers Against Cancer for their devoted work in the fight against childhood cancer. Their diligent efforts come from compassionate hearts, believing no child should have to face the battle of cancer. To have our daughter Ann remembered through the work of Mothers Against Cancer is a gift which blesses us year after year. These ladies are like angels on earth, working to eliminate the pain of cancer from children and their families. It is our prayer that God will bless them in their faithful work.

Mothers Against Cancer inspires us to give from the heart, helping those children who have had the misfortune of being afflicted with a terrifying disease. We have hope these efforts will lead to a cure in our lifetime, or at least in our children’s lifetimes.

In the years that Mothers Against Cancer has been in existence, I am continually amazed and impressed by the growth I’ve seen in this organization. We at Thomas Markle Jewelers derive great pleasure and will continue to support the hard work and dedication that goes into helping these courageous kids.

Mothers Against Cancer is the greatest organization. They all love kids so much and hate to see us suffering. All the money they raise goes directly to Texas Children’s Research Center and with all their help, I know one day we will find a cure to beat cancer. Thanks Mothers Against Cancer!
